Strength & Spine Chiropractic is known for having multiple services available to our patients. From the hands-on work to the rehab, to the now-offered acupuncture and dry needling. We believe it is important to have the knowledge and tools to treat a variety of conditions and presentations as healthcare is not cookie-cutter and you cannot apply one treatment to all.

I, Dr. Cameron, decided it was important to learn how to perform acupuncture and dry needling to provide an additional tool to help my patients in the Tampa and St. Pete area heal faster, feel better, and become healthier. From the professional athlete to the mom of 3 who loves CrossFit, acupuncture provides a slew of different benefits and can help with a multitude of conditions.

At Strength & Spine, acupuncture is mostly used for our patients with back pain, headaches, shoulder pain, and ankle pain. Most people have never been needled outside of getting shots at the doctor’s office. It is not for everyone as some patients fear needles and do not like the sensation and that’s perfectly fine! We understand it may not be for everyone, but it is important to express that to your clinician.

Acupuncture is based on the ancient Chinese medicine technique developed over hundreds of years to help balance Qi and Yin and Yang. The meridians used are based on the ancient philosophy of the element theory and based upon selected points for the Yin and Yang organs. There are over 2,000 acupuncture points throughout the body and some of these are in locations or associated with organs that may not be associated with conventional western medicine. For example, Large Intestine 4, located on the web of the hand by the thumb and index finger is contraindicated in pregnant patients because it is a point used to help induce labor.

Trust me, I know you’re thinking “How does that work?” or “What the heck is this?”.

One thing to address is the practice of acupuncture and the neurophysiological mechanisms of acupuncture and needling has been studied extensively. There are many theories and proposed mechanisms such as stimulating the central nervous system to release chemicals into the spinal cord, muscles, and brain. This further stimulates or enhances the body's ability to heal itself. Strength & Spine used a combination of acupuncture and dry needling points to help with the presenting conditions. There are multiple factors that depend on how much or when needling is performed as well.

If you are interested in needling and curious to know if can benefit you, please feel free to reach out and let us know how we can help. Strength & Spine is one of the most unique chiropractic experiences you’ll have and if you’re looking for different, this is the office for you.
