WHAT IS A JOINT SUPPLEMENT?

A joint supplement is a mix of ingredients that help with the maintenance and integrity of joint cartilage and the reduction of joint inflammatory markers. The most common ingredients one will find in a joint supplement include Glucosamine, Chondroitin, and MSM. There are additional supplements that help like omega-3s, curcumin, Boswellia, and turmeric.

The easiest way to describe what these do is they help keep the joints hydrated and lubricated. They help keep the door hinge from getting rusty and/or help add WD-40 to the joint.

Glucosamine, Chondroitin, and MSM are the most common, and all aid in the production and retention of hydration in joint cartilage. They can also help with the reduction of inflammatory markers.

These are the joint supplement world Big 3. The LeBron James, Dwayne Wade, and Chris Bosh of joint supplement ingredients. But that's not all. You need to also find a supplement that will have them in the appropriate dosages as well. Below you will find the recommended amounts.

  • Glucosamine: equal to or greater than 1,500mg a day
  • Chondroitin: >1,000mg a day
  • MSM: >1,000mg a day

Now most supplements have some additive ingredients, however, as long as you stick to those three basic ingredients, then you are ahead of the game. There is no doubt taking fish oils, Vitamin D, Bosewealia, curcumin, and turmeric can all help, however, you need those 3 for the biggest bang for your buck.

Remember, this is a supplement and will not be a magic pill. It takes consistently taking it for 1-3 months before you really notice a difference in those daily aches and pains. Athletes should be taking this because of how active they are as well.

P.S. Tumeric is quite overrated in today's society as the amount one would need to consume to have a decent effect would be a very high amount combined with a quality diet that also includes turmeric in it. So unless you live, breathe, and die turmeric, then don't go spending the extra money just because one supplement has turmeric and the other doesn't.
